Kazakhstan holds elections for new unicameral Kurultai parliament
Kazakhstan is holding elections for its new unicameral parliament, known as the Kurultai, marking a significant shift from the previous bicameral system. The 145-member legislature will serve five-year terms. The vote follows a constitutional overhaul initiated by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, which included a referendum to merge the Mazhilis and Senate into a single chamber.
According to the Central Election Commission, approximately 12.6 million voters are registered, with 10,423 polling stations established, including 79 stations abroad. Seven political parties are participating in the election, with the ruling pro-presidential Adilet party expected to secure a significant majority. To enter government, parties must obtain at least 5 percent of the total vote.
The new constitutional framework also reestablishes the position of vice president, a role that has not existed in the country for 30 years. Additionally, the Constitutional Court ruled that recent amendments reset the clock on President Tokayev's previous terms, potentially allowing him to run for another seven-year term in the future. International observers from various organizations and countries are monitoring the electoral process.
