Kazakhstan identified as the ancestral home of modern apples

Genetic research has identified the Tian Shan mountains in Central Asia, specifically within Kazakhstan, as the primary ancestral home of the modern cultivated apple. The wild species Malus sieversii is recognized as a key progenitor, with studies showing that 46 percent of more than 10,000 analyzed cultivated apple varieties contain its genetic material.

The spread of these apples from the mountains to the rest of the world occurred in stages. Initially, local fauna, such as the brown bear, helped disperse seeds through natural selection and digestion. Later, humans transported the fruit across various regions via the Silk Road.

In Kazakhstan, the blooming of the Sievers apple is a significant cultural event. The Zhetisu region hosts an annual festival to celebrate the blossoms, which are often compared to Japan’s cherry blossom season. The city of Almaty, whose name translates to ‘Father of Apples’ or ‘Rich in Apples’, remains deeply connected to this botanical heritage.
