Kazakhstan implements cloud seeding to combat severe drought

Kazakhstan has launched a large-scale cloud seeding program to combat severe drought and accelerating desertification. The initiative, which began in May, is currently being tested in the southern Turkestan region to support cotton cultivation.

The weather modification technique involves dispersing substances such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, or silver iodide into existing clouds via aircraft or rockets. This process encourages water vapor to condense into larger droplets that eventually fall as rain. While scientific studies suggest the method can increase precipitation by 15 to 20 percent, it is considered a costly endeavor that requires specific atmospheric conditions to be effective.

The project has raised regional concerns. Former Kyrgyzstani Prime Minister Akylbek Zhaparov expressed apprehension that large-scale atmospheric interventions could disrupt the fragile regional water cycle, noting that Kyrgyzstan is a primary source of water for the area. The United Arab Emirates is reportedly assisting Kazakhstan with the project.
