Kazakhstan to elect new unicameral Kurultai parliament
Kazakhstan is set to hold elections for its new unicameral legislature, the Kurultai, marking a significant shift from the previous bicameral system. The 145-member body will serve a five-year term, which will overlap with the upcoming 2029 presidential elections.
According to the Kazakhstan Central Election Commission, approximately 12.6 million voters are eligible to participate. Voters can choose from seven political parties or select an 'against all' option. To facilitate the process, 10,423 polling stations will be established, including 79 stations at diplomatic missions in 61 countries to allow citizens abroad to vote.
The election is part of a broader political reform process led by President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev following the implementation of a new Constitution. A notable feature of this transition is the reintroduction of the vice president position, a role that had been abolished in 1996. Under the new system, the president will propose a candidate for the vice presidency, subject to parliamentary approval.
