Kazakhstan to hold elections for new Kurultai legislature

Kazakhstan is preparing for elections on August 23, 2026, to elect deputies for the Kurultai, a new 145-seat unicameral legislature. This body replaces the country’s previous bicameral parliament following a constitutional referendum passed in June.

Seven political parties are participating in the election. These include the ruling Amanat party, which recently merged with the Adilet party, and others such as the Auyl Party, Kazakhstan Green Party Baitaq, the People’s Party of Kazakhstan, the Nationwide Social Democratic Party, and the Respublica Party. The Central Election Commission (CEC) is currently verifying candidate credentials and ensuring compliance with statutory quotas, which mandate that at least 30 per cent of party lists consist of women, young people, and persons with disabilities.

The CEC is also focusing on logistical preparations, specifically ensuring that polling premises are physically accessible to voters with disabilities.
