Kazakhstan's Bronze Age 'Giant' Woman Unearthed at Aleksejevka Site

Archaeologists in Kazakhstan have uncovered a burial of a woman dating to c.1500 BC at the Aleksejevka complex near Rudny in the Kostanay region. The site combines a burial ground, a sacrificial mound and a settlement of the Andronovo culture, a rare combination.

The woman's skeleton is almost two metres tall, far taller than other individuals (1.30‑1.40 m) buried at the site, and she was placed centrally with rich grave goods, suggesting a prominent status. She was laid on her right side, unlike most others buried on the left.

Excavations also yielded bronze, silver and gold jewellery, pottery and a nine‑metre‑high mound with traces of ritual food offerings. Additional finds at other regional sites include Indian Ocean cowrie shells indicating long‑distance trade, and more than 150 coins from various civilizations at the Karakabak settlement on the Caspian Sea coast.
