Kazio Grinius Hospital expansion to double care capacity in Kaunas

The Kaunas municipality plans to enlarge the Kazio Grinius Hospital network with two new facilities. A branch in Kulautuva is slated to open in autumn with about 170 patient places, while a new four‑storey A++ energy‑efficient building will be erected on Red Cross Street in the Panemunė district, adding roughly 150 beds. Combined, the projects will raise the number of nursing and supportive‑care places in Kaunas from the current 257 to about 540.

The Panemunė building will preserve the historic interwar sanatorium façade, connect the old and new structures via a glass gallery, and feature an 85 m² green roof and landscaped surroundings. The municipal budget allocates roughly €11 million for the construction, with technical project approval expected in September and the contract to be signed later this year. Completion is targeted for November 2028. Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis highlighted that centralising services will improve infrastructure use, medical resource efficiency and working conditions for staff and patients.
