Kaziranga National Park faces disputes over development and Eco-Sensitive Zone

Disputes regarding the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) and proposed development near Kaziranga National Park have escalated into legal and civil unrest in Assam. Local residents and activists are challenging the current 10-km ESZ radius, arguing it restricts livelihoods and businesses in areas such as Kaliabor and Bokakhat. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma noted that protesters have approached the Supreme Court to seek a reduction of the radius, citing previous judicial observations that allow for state-specific notifications between 1 and 3 km.

The tension is further compounded by opposition to a proposed luxury resort at Inglay Pathar. Protests against this project led to police action, including the registration of a case involving allegations of unlawful assembly, rioting, and criminal intimidation. Pranab Doley, a prominent opponent of the development, was arrested and subsequently detained under the National Security Act after being granted bail by a sessions court.

The Assam government maintains that high-end tourism supports economic growth and employment, while proposing to notify an ESZ of 1 to 3 km to balance conservation with the needs of indigenous communities and essential infrastructure.
