Kazlų Rūda declares emergency after severe storm damage
The Kazlų Rūda municipality has declared an emergency situation following severe storm damage that has caused widespread disruptions to essential services. Mayor Mantas Varaška reported that thousands of residents are facing a water crisis, with some areas without access to clean water for two consecutive days.
Power outages are also significant, affecting approximately 2,000 customers and roughly 3,000 people. The electricity distribution operator, ESO, has indicated that service for some residents may not be restored until between August 27 and 29. Additionally, mobile communication remains unreliable in many areas, leaving residents in remote locations unable to report problems.
The municipality is facing logistical challenges as some roads have become impassable, hindering the delivery of food and medical supplies to isolated settlements. To address these needs, the local government plans to request assistance from the military to help clear debris and transport essential goods.
Public parks and recreational areas have been temporarily closed due to the danger of fallen trees and electrical hazards. Residents have been granted temporary permission to clear dangerous trees from their own property without standard municipal permits until September 10.
