Kazuki Kameda world title fight cancelled due to opponent illness
The scheduled WBA featherweight world title match between Kazuki Kameda and champion Brandon Figueroa has been cancelled. Although the bout was set to take place in Las Vegas, Figueroa was stripped of his title after exceeding the weight limit during the pre-fight weigh-in. The fight was intended to proceed under specific conditions, but Figueroa ultimately withdrew on the day of the match, citing poor health.
The WBA has stated that Kameda’s status is a “top priority” for deliberation, though the path to a new title fight remains uncertain. Current WBA rankings place Mirco Quejojo at number one and Kanishi Nakano at number two, while Kameda is ranked third. Experts suggest the next title bout may involve a match between the top two ranked fighters.
Former world champion Daisuke Naito commented on the situation, noting that while the cancellation is unfortunate, Kameda must simply wait for his next opportunity. Former champion Katsuo Tokashiki offered a more optimistic view, suggesting that Kameda may face a less formidable opponent in his next attempt and could hold a statistical advantage due to his experience as a two-division world champion.
