KB Financial Group integrates natural capital risks into financial management

KB Financial Group has released its ‘2025 Natural Capital Disclosure Report,’ signaling a strategic move to integrate biodiversity and water resource management into its financial risk assessment frameworks. Following the guidelines of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), the group aims to analyze how its loan and investment portfolios impact the natural environment and how environmental changes pose financial risks to the institution.

The report identifies industrial goods, consumer discretionary, and materials as key sectors for management due to their high dependence on natural capital. Specific assets were analyzed using the TNFD ‘LEAP’ approach, including a water treatment facility loan for SK hynix, which was found to require prior biodiversity risk reviews due to its high impact on freshwater and land use. Other analyzed projects include youth housing developments, solar power initiatives, and energy storage systems.

KB Financial Group currently manages approximately 20.8 trillion KRW in ESG-related financial products, with a target to expand this to 25 trillion KRW by 2030. The group plans to extend its financial support to areas such as water management, the circular economy, and renewable energy while assisting small and medium-sized enterprises in transitioning to sustainable business models.
