Lee Jae-keun named next chairman nominee for KB Financial Group

Lee Jae-keun, the current head of Global, WM, and SME divisions at KB Financial Group, has been selected as the final nominee for the group's next chairman. His appointment follows a decision by the recommendation committee to pursue a ‘generational shift’ despite the group achieving record-breaking net profits. Lee is expected to be formally elected during an extraordinary shareholders' meeting on November 20, with a three-year term beginning November 21.

In his initial remarks, Lee emphasized a leadership style focused on decentralized authority, systems, and processes rather than concentrated individual power. He identified artificial intelligence, digital transformation, shifting capital flows, and an aging population as critical challenges that will determine the fate of financial groups over the next three to five years. Lee stated that being a leader means ‘setting new standards and benchmarks for the industry’ rather than merely maintaining a number one position.

The leadership change at KB Financial is expected to trigger a broader wave of personnel reshuffles across its subsidiaries, including KB Kookmin Bank, KB Securities, and KB Insurance, as many current CEOs face term expirations at the end of the year. Meanwhile, the unexpected decision not to reappoint current chairman Yang Jong-hee has also drawn attention to iM Financial Group, where discussions regarding the succession of Chairman Hwang Byung-woo are intensifying.
