KBr Fundación Mapfre hosts Dana Lixenberg retrospective in Barcelona

KBr Fundación Mapfre in Barcelona has launched its autumn season with the retrospective exhibition ‘American Images’ by Dutch photographer Dana Lixenberg. The exhibition features over 126 photographs, a 300-polaroid installation, and various audiovisual materials documenting three decades of Lixenberg’s work in the United States.

A central component of the show is the ‘Imperial Courts’ series, which began in 1993. This project explores the reality of Los Angeles neighborhoods following the 1992 disturbances, aiming to provide a perspective on communities often misrepresented by mainstream media. The collection spans a wide social spectrum, from the ghettos of Los Angeles to New York’s Trump Tower.

Notably, the exhibition includes Lixenberg’s influential portraits of a young Tupac Shakur for VIBE magazine in 1993, images that are credited with helping shape the rapper's iconic status by capturing him away from common hip-hop stereotypes. Alongside this retrospective, the center is also hosting ‘KBr Flama ’26’, showcasing projects from four emerging photographers from Barcelona.
