KDDI and Wi2 to deploy carrier-free 5G Wi-Fi at ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL 2026

KDDI and Wi2 have announced the commercial deployment of carrier-free Wi-Fi at the ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL 2026, scheduled for September 12–13 and 19–21 in Chiba Prefecture. The solution utilizes 5G millimeter wave technology as a backhaul to provide high-speed internet access to all attendees, regardless of their mobile carrier or whether their device supports 5G millimeter wave frequencies.

In addition to the 5G solution, Starlink-based Wi-Fi will be deployed throughout the venue to support visitors, event staff, and vendors. The initiative aims to address network congestion common at large-scale outdoor events. Key benefits include the expansion of mobile ordering services in food areas to reduce queues, improved internet connectivity for social media use in crowded areas, and stable communication for event operations and staff coordination.
