KDDI launches Number Verification v2 on Google Firebase

Japanese telecommunications operator KDDI has commercially launched its Number Verification v2 (NVv2) service through Google’s Firebase developer platform. This new API allows for SIM-based authentication by checking a mobile number against carrier records, eliminating the need for users to receive and manually enter SMS verification codes.

By integrating with Firebase Phone Number Verification, the service enables a one-tap authentication process that typically returns a signed token within one to three seconds after user consent. This method is designed to reduce user friction during sign-ups and mitigate phishing risks associated with intercepting SMS codes. Unlike the previous version, NVv2 supports authentication over Wi-Fi and VPN environments.

The service complies with international standards, including the GSMA Open Gateway and the Linux Foundation CAMARA project. It is available for developers using the Firebase platform to easily implement enhanced security and streamlined login experiences.
