KDDI to launch au hikari plus hybrid 5G and fiber service

KDDI has announced the launch of ‘au hikari plus’, a new hybrid internet service scheduled to begin on September 17, 2026. The service combines fiber-optic lines with au 5G mobile networks to provide high-speed connectivity and enhanced reliability.

A key feature of the service is the ‘Aterm HY01’ hybrid home router. This device allows users to begin using internet and telephone services via the au 5G network immediately upon receiving the router, bypassing the wait for traditional fiber-optic installation work. Once the fiber-optic line is activated, the service automatically transitions to the high-speed line, which can reach up to 10Gbps. The 5G connection remains available as a backup to ensure continuous connectivity during fiber-optic outages or natural disasters.

The hardware supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard and the 6GHz band. Users can also opt for a ‘Wi-Fi Pack’ for a monthly fee, which includes advanced security features to prevent malware and fraudulent site access, as well as enhanced telephone services. The service will be offered in five variations, including home and apartment plans, as well as a wireless-only option. Initial providers include BIGLOBE, So-net, and @nifty.
