KDE community debates generative AI usage and potential bans

The KDE community is experiencing internal debate regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence. A new group, ‘KDE for People’, is advocating for a strict ban on generative AI within KDE Plasma and its components. This group aligns with the goals of ‘KDE Eco’, citing concerns over high energy and water consumption, increased hardware obsolescence, and potential erosion of trust, privacy, and code review integrity.

The controversy intensified during the annual Akademy conference following a presentation proposing an ‘AI-native KDE’. This led to heated discussions among developers and outsiders, resulting in the removal of a draft proposal for AI restrictions from the project's development site. Developers have noted that much of the recent pressure to ban Large Language Models (LLMs) has come from individuals outside the core contributor community.

Similar discussions are occurring in other open-source ecosystems, with GNOME developers also proposing policies to bar LLMs from creating or modifying any content submitted to or hosted by the GNOME project.
