KDF soldier found dead at Marsabit operation base

Authorities are investigating the death of Corporal Kelvin Thuku, a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier found dead at the Karare Forward Operation Base in Marsabit County. The incident was reported on September 27, 2026, after a colleague discovered Thuku with a deep wound to his throat.

Police and Military Police processed the scene, recovering a blood-stained military knife and the deceased’s mobile phone. The investigation is currently treating the case as a suspected murder or suicide to determine the exact circumstances of the death. Thuku’s body has been moved to the Marsabit County Referral Hospital Mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

This incident follows a broader trend of deaths among disciplined forces, which officials often attribute to work-related stress and trauma. The World Health Organization notes that such cases can be linked to various factors, including financial difficulties, depression, and professional pressures.
