KDNP proposes reducing VAT on fruits and vegetables to 5%

The Christian Democratic People's Party (KDNP) has introduced a legislative proposal to reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on vegetables and fruits from 27 percent to 5 percent, effective December 1.

KDNP faction leader Bence Rétvári stated that the proposal addresses a campaign promise previously made by the Tisza Party, which had pledged to lower taxes on healthy foods but has yet to submit such a motion since forming the government. KDNP officials noted that while they intended to act as a constructive opposition by supporting beneficial initiatives, they felt compelled to draft this proposal themselves to ensure the measure moves forward.

The proposed tax reduction would cover a wide range of products, including potatoes, tomatoes, onions, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, legumes, and nuts. The fruit category included in the proposal encompasses grapes, watermelon, apples, pears, quinces, peaches, apricots, cherries, sour cherries, and plums. According to KDNP, the initiative aims to support healthy nutrition for families and children while maintaining the competitiveness of domestic farmers.
