KDU-ČSL seeks no-confidence vote against Czech government over budget deficit

The opposition party KDU-ČSL is seeking to convene a session of the Czech Chamber of Deputies to hold a vote of no confidence in the current government, which is composed of the ANO, SPD, and Motorist movements.

KDU-ČSL leader Jan Grolich cited the proposed 2027 state budget, which includes a deficit of 389 billion CZK, as a primary reason for the move. Grolich described the level of debt as “extraordinary and unjustified,” arguing that the government is acting in contradiction to its own program statements. He also noted that some members of the governing coalition, including representatives from the Motorist and SPD parties, were reportedly unaware of the budget's specific details before its presentation.

Additional political tension stems from a conflict between the Motorist movement and President Petr Pavel, following the President's refusal to appoint Filip Turk as Minister of the Environment. Grolich indicated he is coordinating with other opposition leaders to gather the 50 required signatures for the session. He suggested that if the government were to fall, an expert government could be formed to manage the country until early elections.
