Kearns funeral shooting leaves one dead and two critically injured
A shooting at a funeral in Kearns, Utah, resulted in one death and two critical injuries on Monday. Law enforcement officers were already present at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stake center after receiving reports that a problem might occur during the service.
Gunshots were heard outside the church, where police discovered a victim who later died at a hospital. A second victim was seen being placed in a vehicle that fled the scene, leading to a police pursuit. Officers eventually boxed in the vehicle in West Valley City, where they located the second victim, who was in critical condition. A third victim was also found at the church and transported to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition.
In the aftermath, nearby schools, including Kearns Junior High and West Kearns Elementary, were placed under secure protocols as a precaution. Intermountain Medical Center also temporarily closed its campus and canceled appointments, though officials stated that all patients and staff were safe. Investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident occurring outside the church.
