Keban HES produces 294 billion kWh over 52 years of operation

The Keban Hydroelectric Power Plant (HES), located on the Euphrates River, has produced approximately 294 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity over its 52-year history. Since commencing operations on September 9, 1974, the facility has played a critical role in Turkey's energy sector, at one point supplying 20% of the nation's total electricity needs.

Currently, Keban HES stands as Turkey's third-largest hydroelectric plant, featuring an installed capacity of 1330 megawatts across eight units. Recent data shows a significant surge in production; in the first eight months of this year, the plant produced over 5.2 billion kilowatt-hours, marking an 87.39% increase compared to the same period last year. This spike is attributed to high precipitation in the Euphrates basin, with annual water volume reaching 21 billion cubic meters, compared to a 10-year average of 15 billion cubic meters.

A comprehensive rehabilitation project, coordinated by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and initiated in 2019, is nearing completion. The modernization effort, carried out by Turkish engineers from EÜAŞ and the TÜBİTAK MAM Energy Institute, aims to completely renew the plant's technological infrastructure and enhance energy efficiency using domestic resources.
