Kebbi State and World Bank launch erosion control projects

The Kebbi State Government, in partnership with the World Bank-supported Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACRESAL) Project, has launched gully erosion control and bio-engineering works in the Birnin Kebbi metropolis. The project targets the Badariya and Dukku Malala communities, with interventions split into two lots covering four specific erosion control sites.

Commissioner for Environment Musa Tungulawa stated that the initiative aims to mitigate flooding, soil degradation, and gully expansion that have damaged homes, roads, and farmlands. The works will utilize storm-water management, water harvesting, and controlled channelling to reclaim degraded agricultural and Fadama lands.

More than 50,000 residents are expected to benefit from improved water availability, increased agricultural productivity, and enhanced infrastructure protection. Tungulawa also noted that a Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) is in place to identify and compensate eligible persons affected by the implementation.
