Kecskemét airport excavation reveals 7th-century Avar graves

Archaeologists from the Katona József Museum have discovered nine Avar-era graves at the Kecskemét airport during excavations commissioned by the Hungarian National Museum. Led by archaeologist András Kristóf Fazekas, the team identified burials dating back to the first half of the 7th century, approximately 1,400 years ago.

The findings include five female and two male graves, though two remains could not be sexed due to significant disturbance. Most of the deceased were adults. The graves were found at shallow depths, likely due to land leveling performed during the airport's construction between 1935 and 1937.

Artifacts recovered from the sites show significant variety and relative wealth. Notable finds include pairs of earrings made of bronze and silver, including one highly detailed silver pair decorated with blue glass inlays.
