Kedah faces potential massive compensation claims from gambling operators
The Kedah state government may face compensation claims totaling hundreds of millions of ringgit from gambling operators. This follows a state policy implemented in 2023 to halt the issuance and renewal of gambling premise licenses.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor stated that the state is prepared to defend its policy in court. He noted that the legal challenge arose after the Federal Court rejected the state's application for leave to appeal a decision that deemed the cessation of license renewals invalid. The court also ordered the state government to pay RM50,000 in costs.
Sanusi indicated that the state could contest the scale of claimed losses by verifying whether operators declared their true earnings to the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN). He suggested that legal proceedings might reveal the actual profitability of the gambling companies operating in the state.
