Kedah government proposes Langkawi housing and development plans

The Kedah State Government is proposing the construction of approximately 1,400 planned houses for the residents of Bukit Malut in Langkawi. Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md. Nor stated that the project is contingent upon the Federal Government, through the National Security Council (MKN), resolving land acquisition issues involving the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM).

Residents have expressed a willingness to purchase these homes, provided they are affordable, specifically priced at RM200,000 or below. The current settlement faces challenges including overcrowding and issues with water and electricity supplies due to the lack of land titles. The Menteri Besar noted that development on land owned by Permodalan Kedah Berhad has been delayed because only small portions have been vacated.

Separately, during the Kedah State Legislative Assembly, a proposal was made to establish a comprehensive Langkawi Development Master Plan. This plan aims to ensure sustainable tourism, environmental preservation, and economic growth. The proposal emphasizes the need for strategic cooperation between the State and Federal governments to improve air and sea connectivity and strengthen Langkawi's status as a duty-free island.
