Kedah search continues for elderly man missing after car plunges into river

Search and rescue operations are underway in Sungai Petani, Kedah, to locate 77-year-old Mat Yusof Hashim, who went missing after his Proton Wira veered off the road and plunged into the Lubuk Kawah River.

The incident occurred around 11:40 PM. While the vehicle was successfully recovered from the river using a crane at 3:00 AM, authorities discovered that the driver was not inside the car. The vehicle showed signs of impact, including a broken windshield and a dented roof, leaving it unclear whether the victim was ejected or trapped during the crash.

Fire and rescue teams from Aman Jaya and Sungai Petani are conducting searches using boats, diving techniques, and body rafting. Rescuers have faced challenges including strong currents, water depths of 1.8 meters, and obstacles such as fallen trees and palm fronds. K9 units have also been requested to assist in the search efforts.
