Kedarnath pilgrimage suspended after fatal rockfall in Uttarakhand

A landslide on the Kedarnath pedestrian trekking route in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, has resulted in the death of a local resident, Mohan Tiwari. The incident occurred near the Chirbasa helipad when large boulders fell from a hillside, striking Tiwari, a resident of Pathali village.

Due to the ongoing risk of rockfalls and active landslides, authorities have suspended the Kedarnath pilgrimage in both directions. Travelers heading toward the shrine are being held at Gaurikund and Sonprayag, while those returning from Kedarnath are being detained at the shrine itself.

This incident is part of a series of rockfall events in the Chirbasa area; reports indicate that three people have died due to falling stones along this route over the last 15 days. Security forces and rescue teams are deployed at the site, though some rescue and clearing work has been paused until the landslide conditions stabilize.
