KEDE reports €2.5 billion funding gap for Greek municipalities

The Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) met in Thessaloniki to address a significant funding gap facing local governments. KEDE President Lazaros Kyrizoglou reported that while the total operating cost for municipalities is approximately €5.5 billion, they currently receive only about €3 billion, leaving a deficit of €2.5 billion.

A major point of concern is energy costs, as municipalities reportedly pay approximately 2.5 times more per kilowatt-hour than large-scale consumers. Kyrizoglou expressed cautious optimism regarding potential financial support and discussions with the Public Power Corporation (PPC).

Other regional issues discussed include the transportation of 16,500 students in Thessaloniki ahead of the new school year and the development of the coastal front from Angelochori to Kalochori. Ignatios Kaitezidis, President of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Central Macedonia, also highlighted the need for more personnel and resources for civil protection and employment programs.
