Keelon Russell named starting quarterback for Alabama
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has named Keelon Russell as the starting quarterback, selecting the five-star prospect over veteran Austin Mack. The decision marks a significant moment for DeBoer, as Russell is the first blue-chip quarterback he has recruited to Tuscaloosa.
Former Alabama quarterbacks Greg McElroy and AJ McCarron have commented on the move. McElroy noted that Russell won the position by demonstrating exceptional mobility and the ability to make ‘wow plays’ during scrimmages. He described Russell as a player who ‘scares you to death on every single snap’ due to his ability to extend plays and impact the offense through high-ceiling athleticism.
While Mack is considered a high-quality player with All-SEC potential, Russell’s performance during fall camp and his ability to command the offense were cited as the deciding factors. Russell previously appeared in two games last season, completing 73 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
