Keelung Chang Gung Hospital saves Hong Kong tourist from ruptured aneurysm
A 49-year-old Hong Kong woman was successfully treated for a ruptured cerebral aneurysm after experiencing a medical emergency while traveling in Taiwan. Two years ago, while visiting Jiufen, she suffered sudden, intense neck and head pain, leading to a diagnosis of a ruptured middle cerebral artery aneurysm and diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Medical teams at Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital performed a minimally invasive aneurysm clipping surgery in a hybrid operating room to stop the bleeding. Following intensive neurocritical care, the patient recovered and has since returned to Hong Kong. She recently traveled back to Taiwan to present a commemorative plaque to the medical team in gratitude.
Dr. Yan Jun-lin, Director of Neurosurgery at Keelung Chang Gung, noted that cerebral aneurysm ruptures carry a high mortality rate, often described as the ‘worst headache of one’s life.’ He advised that sudden, severe headaches accompanied by nausea or neck stiffness require immediate emergency medical attention rather than self-medication.
