Keelung Customs issues guidance on mandatory export labeling

Keelung Customs has issued a reminder to exporters regarding the mandatory and correct labeling of the country of origin for goods leaving Taiwan. According to the Trade Act and the Goods Export Management Measures, labels must be placed on the product itself, inner packaging, or outer packaging. These markings must be prominent, durable, and resistant to being removed, covered, or altered.

Permissible labels include ‘Made in Republic of China’, ‘Made in Taiwan, ROC’, or ‘Made in Taiwan’ in English, as well as their Chinese equivalents. Incorrect, false, or confusing labels can lead to legal penalties from the International Trade Administration, customs delays, missed shipping schedules, increased costs, and damage to corporate reputation.

For products with unique characteristics or packaging that make standard labeling difficult, businesses may apply for special approval from the International Trade Administration to avoid disputes. Customs officials urge exporters to verify that all labels are clear, complete, and consistent with customs declaration documents to ensure efficient clearance and maintain the ‘Made in Taiwan’ brand image.
