Legislative Yuan sparks debate over dress code after critique of Taipei 101 Chair
A controversy has erupted in Taiwan's Legislative Yuan following comments made by Democratic Progressive Party legislator Lai Hui-yuan regarding the attire of Taipei 101 Chairperson Jia Yongjie. During a Finance Committee meeting, Lai criticized Jia's outfit—a black dress paired with a white Dior jacket worn over the shoulders—suggesting she should dress more “plainly” to meet the standards of the parliamentary hall.
Jia expressed shock at the remarks, noting that her clothing was appropriate for the occasion. The incident drew responses from various political figures. President Lai Ching-te supported the idea of personal expression, stating on social media that professional competence should not be judged by clothing. Meanwhile, KMT legislators defended Jia, arguing that personal style should be respected as long as it adheres to legal and parliamentary decorum.
Lai Hui-yuan later issued a statement clarifying that her remarks were intended as a good-faith reminder regarding parliamentary etiquette and were not a personal attack on Jia's style or appearance. However, academic critics have pointed out that unlike the parliaments in the United States or Canada, Taiwan's Legislative Yuan lacks formal, codified dress code regulations.
