Kees Smit nears contract extension with AZ Alkmaar until 2030

Dutch midfielder Kees Smit is nearing an agreement to extend his contract with AZ Alkmaar until mid-2030. The 20-year-old, who is currently under contract until 2028, is a product of the AZ academy and has already established himself in the first team and the Netherlands national team.

While Smit had previously been linked to major European clubs, including FC Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar reportedly informed the player in August that he should set aside thoughts of a transfer for the time being. The club had previously engaged agent Jorge Mendes to explore international sales, but concrete interest from top foreign clubs was limited.

Smit’s renewal significantly strengthens AZ Alkmaar’s negotiating position regarding the player's future, as the club will no longer be compelled to sell. For Barcelona, who had viewed Smit as a long-term midfield prospect with playing styles compared to Pedri, the extension complicates any potential future acquisition.
