Kefallonia celebrates Dormition of the Theotokos and annual snake appearances

The religious feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is being observed across Greece, marking a major holiday for the Orthodox Church and a peak period for summer travel. The celebration commemorates the repose of the Virgin Mary and is traditionally preceded by a two-week fast.

In the villages of Markopoulo and Arginia on the island of Kefallonia, the annual appearance of the ‘Snakes of the Panagia’ has been reported. As of early August 2026, several snakes have appeared near chapels dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos, an event associated with local religious miracles.

This tradition has drawn scrutiny from the Party for Animals, Nature and Humanity. The organization has requested that authorities investigate the handling, transport, and confinement of the snakes during the observance to ensure compliance with wildlife protection laws and to examine the relationship between religious practice and animal welfare.
