Kefalonia to Open Daily Chemotherapy Unit at General Hospital
The General Hospital of Kefalonia is set to establish a Daily Chemotherapy Unit, a project announced by Deputy Regional Governor Sotiris Kouris. The unit will provide on‑site administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted treatments for oncology patients on the island, eliminating the need for long trips to Patras, Ioannina or Athens.
The planned facility will feature eight beds, operate in two shifts and serve up to 16 patients per day. Staffing will include an oncologist and specialized nursing personnel, and the unit will cooperate with the Oncology Clinics of the University Hospital of Ioannina to ensure treatment standards and electronic patient records. The administration aims to have the unit fully functional within the coming year, improving care quality and reducing patient burden.
The initiative follows a July 2026 council decision to allocate space and resources for the unit, with funding to be sought from regional health infrastructure programs.
