Kefalonia wildfire triggers emergency evacuations in Metaxata
A large wildfire broke out in the agricultural and forest areas of Metaxata on the island of Kefalonia, Greece, on Sunday afternoon. The fire, which started around 16:20, spread through dense shrubbery near residential areas, prompting an immediate emergency response.
The Greek Fire Service deployed ground forces, including up to 25 firefighters, seven vehicles, and a specialized foot patrol team from the 16th EMODE. Aerial support consisting of two aircraft and one helicopter was utilized to drop water and contain the flames. The Municipality of Kefalonia also provided assistance via water tankers.
Due to the proximity of the fire to homes, the 112 emergency service issued evacuation orders for the settlements of Kurkoumelata, Metaxata, and Lakithra, instructing residents to move toward Argostoli via Leivathos. Authorities reported that the fire was brought under control following the rapid mobilization of emergency services. An arson investigation unit has been deployed to determine the cause of the blaze.
