Keiko Fujimori faces declining approval in Peru

President Keiko Fujimori is facing a significant decline in public approval during her first month in office. According to various polls, including those from the Institute of Peruvian Studies (IEP) and Datum, her approval ratings have dropped sharply, with some measurements showing a decline of 18 percentage points. In some recent surveys, citizen rejection has surpassed support, reaching levels as high as 44% to 49%.

This downturn is attributed to several factors, including rising concerns over citizen insecurity and organized crime, specifically following high-profile incidents involving criminal gangs. The government has responded by seeking legislative powers to designate certain criminal groups as terrorist organizations.

Amidst these domestic challenges, Fujimori is preparing for her first major international trip to New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly. She will be accompanied by a ministerial delegation, including the Foreign Minister and the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism. During her absence, the administration of the Presidency will be handled by First Vice President Luis Galarreta, with Defense Minister Rafael Belaunde coordinating internal government affairs.
