Peru President Keiko Fujimori addresses crime, El Niño, and falling approval

President Keiko Fujimori is addressing multiple national crises in Peru, including rising crime, an imminent severe El Niño event, and declining public approval.

Regarding security, Fujimori has acknowledged the advancement of criminality and announced a new strategy focused on intelligence and inter-institutional coordination. This includes the creation of a High-Level Commission for Citizen Security, led by Cabinet Chief Luis Galarreta, to streamline information sharing between agencies like the UIF and Migraciones. Additionally, the government has implemented stricter disciplinary codes in public schools to combat bullying and restore order.

On the environmental front, the President warned of a “really dramatic” El Niño phenomenon, noting that sea temperatures are five degrees Celsius above normal, surpassing historical records from 1982 and 1997. To mitigate risks, the government has prioritized 536 of 1,800 identified risk points for preventive works and plans to establish shelters for 30,000 people and field hospitals in northern regions like Tumbes and Piura.

These challenges coincide with a significant drop in political support. Recent polling by AtlasIntel for Bloomberg indicates Fujimori's approval has fallen to 28.3%, while disapproval has reached 53.6%, driven largely by concerns over the economy and public safety.
