Chile and Peru face political shifts amid security and leadership debates

In Chile, political leaders are addressing economic and security concerns. President José Antonio Kast met with ruling party leaders to discuss rising unemployment, which reached 9.5% in the May-July quarter, and declining approval ratings. Simultaneously, Senators Andrés Longton and Arturo Squella have proposed seven modifications to the government's security reform. Their proposal aims to replace a fifth state of exception with a mechanism for threats to public order, equate organized crime with terrorism, and adjust communication interception powers.

In Peru, Prime Minister Luis Galarreta stated that the administration of President Keiko Fujimori will fulfill its campaign promises regardless of whether Congress grants requested legislative powers. Galarreta ruled out using a vote of confidence to avoid constant political confrontation. However, official records from the Council of Ministers reveal that during her first month, President Fujimori remained silent during seven of ten cabinet sessions, leading to criticisms regarding her leadership and decision-making compared to her predecessor, Pedro Castillo.
