Keiko Fujimori's anemia statistics for Peru labeled inaccurate

President Keiko Fujimori claimed during an official event in Callao that her government faces the challenge of reducing anemia in Peru, which she stated stands at 40%.

An analysis of data from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) and the Ministry of Health (Minsa) suggests this figure is misleading. While the 40% figure approximates the rate for the specific priority group of children aged 6 to 35 months, it omits the general childhood average, which has remained below 34% nationally between 2022 and 2025.

According to ENDES data, the national anemia rate for children under five has consistently stayed below 34%. In urban areas, rates do not exceed 30.5%, whereas rural areas show higher indices, reaching approximately 40%. The president's figure also significantly exceeds the operational statistics recorded by Minsa health establishments.
