Keio Bus to deploy AI accident prevention system in Chofu

Keio Bus and Keio Dentetsu Bus have announced the implementation of an AI-powered accident prevention system developed by Hino Motors. The technology will be deployed on specific routes in Chofu, Tokyo, starting in late August 2026.

The system utilizes onboard cameras and AI to analyze passenger posture and movement. It is designed to detect situations where passengers are at risk of falling due to vehicle movement during departure or deceleration. When a risk is identified, the system notifies the driver via audio and visual alerts and prompts passengers to sit down or use handrails through onboard monitors.

This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s ‘Comprehensive Safety Plan for Commercial Vehicles 2030,’ which aims to reduce in-vehicle accidents. Beyond immediate safety, the technology is intended to support driver working environments and serve as a stepping stone toward future autonomous bus operations. A verification experiment is scheduled to take place from September 7 to October 2, 2026.
