Keisean Nixon faces competition for Packers starting cornerback role
Green Bay Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon is facing intense competition for a starting role during the NFL preseason. Despite being a former Pro Bowler, Nixon is no longer guaranteed a spot in the starting lineup, as the coaching staff has moved him to work with the second team to evaluate other options.
Secondary coach Bobby Babich and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon have emphasized the need for improved technique, specifically regarding tackling and assignments. Nixon’s position is being challenged by several players, including free agent signing Benjamin St-Juste and second-round draft pick Brandon Cisse, the latter of whom has performed better than expected.
Nixon expressed frustration regarding the situation, suggesting he felt he was being ‘punished’ but maintained that he would continue to focus on his own process and competition. He is currently in the final year of an $18 million contract.
