Keisha Lance Bottoms proposes Georgia grocery tax cuts

Democratic gubernatorial nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms has unveiled an affordability plan aimed at reducing grocery costs in Georgia. The proposal seeks to allow cities and counties the option to waive their local sales taxes on groceries and other essential items, or to temporarily suspend these taxes during periods of sharp price increases.

To support this initiative, Bottoms proposed establishing a one-year, $250 million state fund to subsidize local communities that experience revenue losses exceeding 5% of their previous year's grocery-tax collections. The plan relies on the assumption that Democrats would secure control of both the state House and Senate to implement such changes.

This announcement follows a previous proposal by Republican candidate Rick Jackson, who advocated for cuts to income and energy taxes. Bottoms framed the rising cost of living as an existential crisis for citizens, contrasting her plan with the record of Donald Trump, who has endorsed Jackson.
