Keisha Lance Bottoms seeks historic Georgia governorship

Black women are positioned for potential historic breakthroughs in the 2026 gubernatorial elections. Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is currently the Democratic nominee for governor of Georgia and stands as the only Black woman among major-party gubernatorial nominees. If elected, she would become the first Black woman to serve as a state governor in the United States.

To support her candidacy, high-profile Black leaders, including Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Senator Raphael Warnock, and former Ambassador Rev. Andrew Young Jr., recently held a virtual event to rally Black men to mobilize for Bottoms. The effort comes as Democrats seek to address declining turnout among Black voters, particularly younger Black men, in a political landscape where Republicans have made modest gains within this demographic.

While Black political representation is increasing in some sectors, advocates warn that changes to election laws and congressional redistricting could impact political influence in Southern states. The 2026 cycle features a record number of Black gubernatorial nominees across both Democratic and Republican parties.
