British Columbia legal updates: manslaughter sentencing and parole extension

Two separate legal developments in British Columbia involve high-profile criminal cases.

In Kelowna, the Crown is seeking a life sentence for Ekene Anigbo, who was convicted of manslaughter in the 2021 death of Kathleen Richardson in Naramata. Anigbo and co-accused Jalen Falk entered Richardson’s home and confined her before she was shot. While the Crown could not prove Anigbo fired the shots, he was convicted of manslaughter for his role in the incident, which was linked to a conspiracy involving stolen drugs and money. Falk previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Separately, the Parole Board of Canada has extended the day parole of Keith Gregory Wiens for another six months. Wiens, a 71-year-old retired RCMP officer, was convicted in 2013 of murdering his partner, Lynn Kalmring, in 2011. Despite the Parole Board noting that Wiens continues to pose a high risk of violence against future intimate partners, his limited release to a halfway house in Ontario has been extended.
