Keith Sonderling Advances Toward Confirmation as U.S. Labor Secretary
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee voted 12‑11 along party lines to advance the nomination of Keith Sonderling as the next Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor. Sonderling, who has served as acting Labor Secretary since Lori Chavez‑DeRemer left the post in April, was praised by the National Association of Manufacturers and its Manufacturing Institute for his focus on apprenticeship programs and workforce upskilling.
During the committee hearing, Sonderling addressed contentious issues such as overtime rules, independent‑contractor classifications, and the impact of artificial‑intelligence technologies on the workforce. He highlighted the department’s AI Literacy Framework and advocated for a proactive approach that equips workers and businesses with AI skills. The committee’s recommendation now moves the nomination to the full Senate for a confirmation vote.
