Special Olympics Canada Summer Games conclude in Medicine Hat

The 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games recently concluded in Medicine Hat, Alberta, featuring athletes from across the country. The event served as a qualifier for the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Santiago, Chile.

Team British Columbia saw significant success, earning a total of 101 gold, 123 silver, and 133 bronze medals. Notable performers included Yorke Parkin, who secured gold in the 100-metre individual swim medley and a silver in the 50-metre breaststroke. Powerlifter Paige Norton claimed gold in the bench press, deadlift, and all-around competition. Other medalists from the region included Jeff Both in swimming, Daniel Boshart in track and field, and Ashley Rosenberger, who earned three medals in various swimming events.

Athletes from the Northwest Territories also achieved personal bests, with Chelsey Makaro winning two gold medals in swimming, Marcus Wedawin winning gold in the 200-metre freestyle, and Josh Boudreau winning gold in the 3,000-metre run. The games included 10 different sports and involved approximately 1,700 participants.
