Special Olympics Canada Summer Games held in Medicine Hat
The 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games are currently taking place in Medicine Hat, Alberta, featuring more than 1,700 athletes competing across 10 different sports.
Athletes from British Columbia, including a delegation of 20 from Kelowna, faced significant travel challenges due to wildfire smoke. After flights were grounded, the team completed a 13-hour bus journey to reach the event. Despite the disruption, competitors have secured multiple medals, including successes in 10-pin bowling and bocce.
Notable performances include Tanner Svenson from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, who won gold in bocce, and Christine Greer, who earned a medal in bowling. Top standings currently show Team Ontario in first place, followed by British Columbia and Alberta. Medalists may qualify for the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Chile next year.
