Kelowna Cancer Centre receives $110,000 donation for prostate cancer research
A $110,000 donation was made to the BC Cancer Foundation to support prostate cancer research and brachytherapy at the Kelowna Cancer Centre. The funds were raised by the Motorcycle Ride for Dad Okanagan Chapter after a year‑long fundraising effort.
Since its launch in 2009, the Ride for Dad campaign has collected more than $1.4 million for prostate cancer initiatives. About 60‑70 % of the new donation will be directed to research and treatment led by Dr. Juanita Crook, a professor of radiation oncology at the University of British Columbia and research chair in prostate brachytherapy at the Kelowna Cancer Centre.
The contribution will finance research projects, purchase new equipment, and hire staff such as statisticians and pathology assistants. It also supports genetic‑profiling work on aggressive prostate cancers, using a ten‑year data set from roughly 200 patients, and helps expand a high‑dose‑rate brachytherapy program that delivers radiation in a single session under anesthesia.
